Quiet Beginnings | Leaving January Behind

As February begins, there’s often a subtle sense of shifting. January can feel long and heavy, a month to get through rather than fully live in. For many, it’s about hunkering down, getting back into routines, managing expectations and carrying whatever the new year has already brought.

I noticed something changing yesterday while I was walking: the first snowdrops beginning to appear. They’re easy to miss if you’re not looking for them.

Snowdrops don’t signal that winter is over or that everything is suddenly better. They appear while the ground is still hard and the days are still short. There’s something comforting to me about the fact that they grow anyway.

Personal growth can be like that too. It doesn’t wait for perfect conditions or always happen when life feels settled or clear. Sometimes it begins when we’re still grieving, feeling stuck, overwhelmed or numb, and we might not even recognise that something is changing.

People often come to counselling unsure whether anything can really shift. The decision to pause and talk about what’s going on inside can itself be a beginning. Not a sudden transformation, but a start.

Counselling isn’t about forcing change or rushing towards solutions. It can give you somewhere to explore what you’re feeling at your own pace, without needing to have everything figured out. Over time, small insights, moments of understanding or a little more self-compassion can begin to take shape.

I often see this kind of change in my work, and it’s rarely dramatic. It might be noticing your feelings a little sooner, understanding something about yourself differently, or being a bit kinder to yourself than you were before. Sometimes it’s simply a sense that something is shifting, even though life around you looks much the same.

As February begins, I’m mindful of how easy it is to think growth has to look a certain way. I don’t believe it does, and I don’t think it follows a neat timeline. Sometimes growth is simply allowing yourself to be where you are and recognising the small changes that are already taking place.

Affirmation: “I trust the timing of my own growth.”
